In one of the most thrilling matches of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, Afghanistan narrowly defeated Bangladesh to secure their spot in the semi-finals. This victory not only ousted Australia from the competition but also placed Afghanistan among the tournament's final four contenders, alongside India, England, and South Africa. Bangladesh, also in contention for the semi-finals, needed a decisive win. However, the outcome hinged on whether Afghanistan or Australia would advance, as Bangladesh's run chase in St Vincent featured numerous twists and turns.

Winning the toss, Afghanistan's captain Rashid Khan chose to bat first. The match's tension was evident from the very first ball, with opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz narrowly avoiding a run-out. This close call set the tone for the game. Bangladesh's bowlers made scoring difficult, restricting Afghanistan to just five runs in the initial two overs. Nonetheless, Gurbaz and his partner Ibrahim Zadran focused on preserving their wickets, leading Afghanistan to 27/0 by the end of the Powerplay.

Gurbaz and Zadran continued their steady partnership, achieving a 50-run stand early in the ninth over and creating history by becoming the first pair to make four 50-plus partnerships in a T20 World Cup. Despite Bangladesh's efforts to control the run rate, they conceded 13 extras in the first nine overs. Afghanistan reached 58/0 at the drinks break, but they needed to accelerate their scoring. The breakthrough came soon after the mid-innings break, with Zadran (18 off 29) getting caught. This was followed by a maiden over from Bangladesh, adding to Afghanistan's batting nerves. Although Gurbaz managed to hit two boundaries in the 14th over, tight bowling from Bangladesh created further opportunities.
Azmatullah Omarzai was dismissed cheaply, and Gurbaz (43 off 55) soon followed, leaving Afghanistan in a precarious position. Bangladesh continued to take wickets, leaving Afghanistan at 99/5 with two overs remaining.

Rashid Khan's Vital Contribution

Rashid Khan provided a crucial late cameo, hitting three sixes and expressing his frustration over the running between the wickets. His efforts propelled Afghanistan to 115/5 after 20 overs, just as rain started in St Vincent. The rain added to the tension, with Australia also anxiously waiting to see if the match would resume.

As play resumed, Gurbaz was in the spotlight again, this time for an injury. An awkward bounce hit his knee, leading to a short break. Fazalhaq Farooqi then struck, removing Tanzid Hasan (0 off 3). Naveen-ul-Haq delivered two major blows in the third over, including dismissing the Bangladesh captain. Rain caused another delay in the fourth over, threatening to invoke the DLS method. Despite this, Bangladesh reached 46/3 by the end of the Powerplay, with Litton Das and Soumya Sarkar forming a partnership.

Rashid Khan entered the attack and immediately made an impact, dismissing Sarkar (10 off 10). Bangladesh needed to complete their run chase in 12.1 overs to surpass Australia and qualify for the semi-finals. Towhid Hridoy's boundaries in the eighth over shifted momentum briefly, but Khan struck back, removing Hridoy in the next over. Das, alongside veteran Mahmudullah, stabilized Bangladesh's innings, reaching 77/5 at the drinks break. However, Khan's back-to-back wickets in the 11th over, including Mahmudullah, brought the match back into balance. Khan finished with impressive figures of 23/4.

Rain briefly returned, but play resumed with Bangladesh slightly ahead on the DLS par score. With 20 runs needed from the last four overs, Litton reached a half-century off 41 balls, looking to guide his team to victory. However, Taskin Ahmed's dismissal for 2 off 9 brought further drama, leaving Bangladesh at 109/9 with nine runs needed from eight deliveries.
Mustafizur Rahman, focusing on survival, was trapped on LBW's first ball by Naveen-ul-Haq, who took his fourth wicket. This triggered wild celebrations as Afghanistan secured their semi-final spot most dramatically.

Conclusion

In a match filled with suspense and dramatic turns, Afghanistan clinched their place in the semi-finals of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. Their victory over Bangladesh, marked by strategic batting, crucial partnerships, and standout bowling performances, particularly from Rashid Khan, has etched their name in cricket history. This triumph is a testament to Afghanistan's growing prowess in the cricketing world, setting the stage for an exciting semi-final showdown.
