Tottenham Hotspur was founded in 1882 by members of the Hotspur cricket club. They played their first match on September 30, 1882, against a local team called the Radicals, which they won 4-1. In the early days, Tottenham played at various grounds around North London, but in 1899 they moved to White Hart Lane, their home for over a century.

Throughout the years, Tottenham has had several highs and lows. In the 1950s, they won their first league championship and became the first team in the 20th century to achieve the league and cup double. In 1961, they became the first British team to win a European trophy, the Cup Winners' Cup.
