10 Times Harry Potter's Sass Went Too Far In The Books

Harry Potter has always been a sassy character with comebacks that would rip a person in two. Well, here are 10 times Harry Potter's sass... went too far.

If you think that Harry Potter was this calm boy who always obeyed orders, well, you're wrong. The character has been written in a way where his sassy comebacks are enough to make the Dark Lord surrender.

From arguing with Snape to calling Voldemort maidenless, Harry Potter's character is filled with sass and the spirit of rebellion in his eyes (not the ghosts of his past, which Rita originally thought). Well, without further ado, here are 10 times Harry Potter's sass got the best of him in the books.

10) Harry's Face is Powerful Enough

The trio looking in curiosity in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was the book where things got really intense. With Voldemort returning in the previous book, no one from the Ministry of Magic is ready to believe that the Dark Lord has truly returned.

Well, during a segment in the books, Dumbledore’s army barges into the offices of the Ministry of Magic. Well, although they are deemed as rebels to the Ministry, Harry Potter decides to use his own face instead of a disguise.

Entering the room like a boss with some banger music playing in the background (not really), Harry Potter’s decision to use his face instead of a disguise puts him at risk, but Potter wanted to make a statement. And a statement he made, though using his sass instead of his words.

9) Scolding Professor Snape

Snape in the Harry Potter franchise

During Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harry Potter brews the perfect potion by following the Half Blood Prince’s book. Harry, who was often terrible at potions, seemed to outdo even Hermione Granger, which caused Professor Severus Snape to take a jab at Granger.

"What is it about your potion that suggests you have failed, Granger?" says Snape. Harry promptly interjects and boastingly states that “Sir, I followed the instructions. The Prince's instructions”. This direct defiance acted as an insult to Snape since Potter indirectly stated that Snape was an incompetent teacher who couldn’t teach properly. Ooh, snap!

8) Taunting the Dursleys

The Dursley family

In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter was still living under the roof of the Dursleys in the initial segment of the book. Well, when the Dursleys lock Potter in his room, he says to Dudley that he cannot even remotely understand the concept of “magic”.

While Dudley tries to taunt Harry for being locked up, Harry Potter goes on a rant to explain how he will be learning magic in Hogwarts, something that is completely forbidden to Dudley. This painful jab works as Dudley leaves the room in a huff, and the satisfying sound of him smashing against the wall in haste is heard. Take that! Non-magic Dursleys.

7) Harry Has His Godfather's Fury

Sirius Black in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Order of the Phoenix really brought out Harry’s wild side. When he catches Mundungus Fletcher stealing from Sirius Black’s house, he goes on a rage-filled fury as he shouts, “You stole from my dead godfather! You're a coward and a thief!”

This moment not only is a remark on Harry Potter’s rage and anger but is also a challenge to the hierarchy of the Order of the Phoenix, which isn’t always filled with good people. Of course, Harry Potter’s unchecked rage was completely justified, having to cope with the loss of his godfather. However, his defiance and his unbreakable will were quite notable.

6) Harry's Father Was a Bully?

James Potter and his friends

Yes. Harry Potter’s father was a bully, but the Boy Who Lived used that line to taunt Professor Snape (again) in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Snape and Harry’s rivalry has been quite infamous, but during a cruel lesson, Snape goads Potter by showing him a cruel memory of his father (James Potter) bullying Snape.

Well, of course, Harry Potter cannot take that and snaps back at Snape by saying, “I'm sorry, sir. I didn't realize that my father was such a bully”. I can already hear the boxing bells. This incredibly personal insult to Snape was a way for Harry to say that he was weak and couldn’t do anything other than get bullied by his classmates.

It was quite disrespectful and showcased Harry Potter’s composed and snarky side in the books.

5) You Can Duel Harry Potter if You Like

The trio at Hog's Head

While forming Dumbledore’s Army at Hog’s Head in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter is already distressed. During the selection, Zacharias Smith questions Potter’s ability to lead the army and whether he can handle the stress or not.

Taking on the role of Joffrey Baratheon from Game of Thrones, Harry Potter tauntingly replies, “If you're so interested in what it's like, you can come and see. We can duel, if you like”. I can literally imagine Ramsey Bolton saying something like this to Jon Snow (sorry, old habits die hard).

However, Potter openly challenges Smith to a battle, and although it was supposed to show that Harry Potter isn’t afraid, it also depicted Harry’s ruthless side, which is filled with snarky comebacks and a repeated usage of “Expelliarmus”.

4) He Who Shall Not Be Named... is Lord Voldemort

Umbridge standing in Hogwarts

This part was even shown in the movie as well. With Professor Umbridge taking her first class, she claims that the Ministry of Magic’s position is that they shouldn’t be learning about harmful spells since there is no danger in sight. When she is done, Harry raises his hand to ask a question. When called by Umbridge, Harry Potter asks loudly, “You mean to say, 'Lord Voldemort is back'?”.

This wasn’t a question but rather a statement made by Harry Potter. This defiance declared an open rebellion against the Ministry of Magic, which also earned Potter his first detention (one of many).

3) He Was Attacked by Dementors

Harry Potter put on trial

Harry Potter cannot reply in “Yes” or “No” fashion since the talented wizard has to go beyond ordinary words to get his sarcastic reply. When standing trial for using magic in front of a Muggle, Harry Potter was asked whether he produced a Patronus or not.

A normal person would have answered with a simple “Yes” or “No,” but with Harry Potter’s rage getting the best of him, Potter went beyond a simple “Yes” and stated, “Yes, I did. I was being attacked by Dementors.” It wasn’t a defensive statement but rather a snarky remark on Ministry’s control and how they cannot take care of the Dementors.

The scene showcased Potter’s willingness to stand up against something that was wrong in a system that was unjust.

2) Harry Has His Mother's Eyes, Not Ghosts of the Past

Rita Skeeter, Cedric Diggory and Harry Potter in Goblet of Fire

Oh. Poor Rita. During Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Rita asks the Triwizard candidates some questions, and for unknown reasons, she goes very deeply into Harry Potter’s past while talking to him. She even suggests that Harry’s eyes were glistening with the ghosts of the past.

Being irritated and feeling pressured, Harry Potter sharply and publicly remarks that, “My eyes aren't 'glistening with the ghosts of my past'! They're glistening because I'm sweating!”. It’s a perfectly timed sarcastic remark that shatters Rita’s dramatic narration of events and gives her a reality check on real life vs sensational stories.

1) Voldemort is Maidenless

Voldemort in Goblet of Fire

Last, and certainly the best. This little line comes during the events of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire when Voldemort is resurrected. After being resurrected, Voldemort talks to Harry Potter about the power of love and how it is such a fickle emotion, yet so powerful.

Interrupting Voldemort in his monologue, Harry Potter interjects, "I don't need a lecture on love from a bloke who can't even touch a girl.". He basically called Voldemort maidenless and alone. Well, that was a very personal insult that might have cut deep into Voldemort’s soul (which was divided into seven pieces).

Of course, Voldemort being called ‘single’ by Harry Potter is quite ironic since we know that even Potter had a tough time asking out girls on a date during the Ball Night in the same book. However, Harry Potter’s snarky side took over, and Voldemort was never able to recover from that insult.
