How Ted Mosby ended up with that pineapple on the nightstand in "The Pineapple Incident"!
For those who have seen the iconic sitcom and have been avid fans of the show, you know what we are talking about. The “Pineapple Incident” refers to an iconic situation that took place in Season 1, Episode 10 of the iconic show, which left the fans scratching their head.
For the unversed, the “Pineapple Incident” was never solved in the show. It refers to the night Ted Mosby got himself quite drunk and couldn’t remember the entire night the next day. Although everything seemed to be normal, there were two things that were completely out of the ordinary in Ted’s room. The first was a woman that Ted (for the life of him) couldn’t remember. The second object… was a pineapple.
I mean... yes and no. The pineapple did not belong to Ted Mosby, but he did become the rightful owner of it after a wild party that left him broken, hungover, and questioning his choices.
In that episode, Ted Mosby wakes up to see a pineapple sitting on his bedside table and an unknown woman lying beside him. Although the mystery of the unknown woman is solved (Ted’s ex-flame), the mystery of the pineapple still remains.
Ted Mosby even tries retracing his steps, but to no avail, until the mystery is abandoned to continue the storyline. Well, in a scene that is available on the DVD of How I Met Your Mother, the mystery of the pineapple is finally revealed.
The scene shows Ted being very drunk and deciding to steal a pineapple that is lying on a sea captain’s front porch (it was Halloween, not an actual sea captain). While loudly declaring that “This is the fruit that represents my new life!”, Ted Mosby tries to steal the pineapple until the sea captain, an old man, comes out and gives him the pineapple willingly while claiming that he was just trying to get rid of it.
Thus, that is how Ted Mosby ends up with a pineapple on his bedside table and an unknown woman on his bed. Of course, the whole ordeal with the pineapple goes to show how absurd and unserious several of the show’s storylines can be. However, there have also been several moments where the show’s brilliance has shone more than its absurd and slapstick comedy!
In Episode 22 of season one, Ted Mosby is approached by a stripper at the end of the episode. The stripper introduces herself and reveals her name to be Tracy. As a means to finish the season on a light note, Future Ted jokes to his kid that that is how he met their mother.
What seems to be strange is that both kids sit upright and have a shocking reaction to this statement before Future Ted laughs it off.
Well, the only theory that makes sense is that Ted accidentally (and very smartly) revealed that The Mother is indeed named Tracy. If the Mother were named something else, the kids wouldn’t have had a shocking reaction, nor would Ted have joked about it, because it simply wouldn’t work.
Naturally, the show writers brilliantly included the name of the Mother in the first season of the show, which thousands of fans seemed to miss out on during their first watch.
