This plot hole makes the entire motivations of the killer nonsensical by introducing a plot twist that really wasn't necessary.
I Know What You Did Last Summer is a 1997 slasher film that was roughly 15 years too late and riddled with plot holes that could fill a lake. As if hitting a guy and running away wasn’t bad enough for the main characters, they were now stalked and hunted by a killer who wants to exact vengeance on them.
In a final moment of plot twist, revelations are made, and while trying to surprise the audience with a twist, the whole plot of I Know What You Did Last Summer becomes utterly ridiculous and nonsensical.
The plot hole becomes so wide that the world would have been fine if the movie hadn’t been made. No offense to the cast and crew members because the film, in itself, was quite iconic, but the story… not too much.
Throughout the movie, Ben Willis has been hunting the main characters. They believe that the man they had killed had somehow come back from the grave and was seeking vengeance because they dumped his body.
At the end of the film, it is revealed that the killer was actually the brother of the man who had allegedly died by the main characters. Although it was a good-enough twist, the film ruined it by having another twist in the case, which made the entire plot pointless.
It is later revealed that the man who had died at the beginning of the movie wasn’t even alive when the main characters hit him. In a separate incident, a revelation is made that Ben Willis had already killed his brother before dumping his body on the road. It was just a happenstance that the main characters chanced upon running over the dead body.
However, since it was Ben Willis who killed his brother, there was no point in Ben Willis hunting and killing the main characters. What’s even the point of Willis hunting down these characters who ran over his brother’s dead body… if he was the one who killed him in the first place?
This plot hole, in my opinion, is higher than the kill count that was depicted in the movie, which makes the entire storyline of I Know What You Did Last Summer pointless.
