A film that becomes a national phenomenon often stands apart from one designed to be one. The difference lies in authenticity—how convincingly the story immerses audiences and how well its creators commit to the universe they craft. From Baahubali 2 and KGF 2 to newer projects like Kanguva and Devara: Part 1, many films buckle under their ambition, striving too hard to achieve legendary status.

This struggle is even more apparent in franchises. Filmmakers frequently lose sight of what made the first installment a fan favorite, instead prioritizing the expansion of appeal or amplification of signature elements. The result? A sequel that feels hollow in comparison to its predecessor. Unfortunately, Sukumar’s Pushpa 2: The Rule—starring Allu Arjun, Fahadh Faasil, and Rashmika Mandanna—joins the ranks of sequels overwhelmed by expectations and an eagerness to outdo themselves.

The Essence of Pushpa: What’s Missing This Time?

The title song’s lyric, “Anni unna Pushpa ki paapam konni levanta” (Pushpa has everything, except a few), aptly summarizes the film’s dilemma. While the song alludes to Pushpa lacking fear, sadness, or equally formidable rivals, the sequel reveals more gaps than anticipated.

Yes, the film retains many elements that made the original a hit. There are high-energy action sequences, larger-than-life moments, and fiery dialogues. However, it lacks the narrative depth and emotional resonance that gave Pushpa: The Rise its enduring charm. Despite its expanded scale, the sequel struggles to deliver anything significantly beyond the first installment’s offerings.

Grandiosity vs. Grounded Storytelling

From the very start, Sukumar aims to outdo the original, emphasizing the sequel’s grand scale. Yet, the grandeur often feels forced rather than organic. For example, Pushpa’s escapades—fighting in a Japanese port, purchasing a helicopter in Dubai, and crossing borders to Sri Lanka—feel over-the-top and disconnected from the grounded storytelling that defined the first film. These exaggerated scenarios clash with the raw, earthy appeal that made the original relatable, making Pushpa 2 feel like it’s trying too hard to appear “global.”

Pushpa’s Character: From Relatable to Branded

Allu Arjun in Pushpa 2

One of the defining strengths of The Rise was Pushpa’s relatability. Unlike the near-mythical figures of Rocky Bhai or Baahubali, Pushpa was human—a flawed, layered character audiences could connect with. However, in The Rule, the need to transform him into a larger-than-life brand reduces his complexity, leaving behind a one-dimensional figure.

While the rivalry between Pushpa and SP Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat IPS (Fahadh Faasil) initially sets up a promising showdown, this dynamic loses momentum as the story shifts focus. The exploration of male ego, which was integral to the first film, remains compelling thanks to the electrifying performances and chemistry between Allu Arjun and Fahadh Faasil. Yet, the narrative’s lack of focus diminishes the impact of this clash.

Srivalli’s Role: Progress Undermined by Stereotypes

Rashmika Mandanna in Pushpa 2

The relationship between Pushpa and his now-wife Srivalli (Rashmika Mandanna) remains a weak point. While the film takes a progressive step by depicting a woman who openly expresses her desires, it simultaneously undermines this with the hypersexualization of Srivalli. Rashmika delivers nuanced performances in restrained scenes, but her portrayal often veers into caricature in more dramatic moments.

Additionally, it’s hard not to notice a recurring pattern in Rashmika’s filmography—being paired with eccentric characters, from Pushpa to others like Major Ajay Krishna in Sarileru Neekevvaru or Vijay in Varisu. One can only hope she soon shares the screen with a more grounded co-star.

Conclusion

Pushpa 2: The Rule delivers spectacle, high-energy moments, and plenty of mass appeal, but it falters when compared to its predecessor. The grounded storytelling and character depth that made Pushpa: The Rise a standout are often overshadowed by the sequel’s over-the-top ambition. While the film is more entertaining than most “pan-Indian” releases, its attempt to scale new heights often feels superficial and disconnected. Strong performances by Allu Arjun and Fahadh Faasil keep it engaging, but the lack of cohesion and meaningful progression holds it back from reaching the same heights as the original. Fans of the franchise may enjoy the ride, but Pushpa 2 struggles to rise above the weight of its own expectations.
