Excited about The Conjuring: Last Rites? Well, here are some goofs from The Conjuring universe that break the frightening tension.
Famous for making people work out and make their hearts stronger, the Conjuring franchise has been known to be one of the scariest films out there. Redefining horror cinema for good, the plethora of movies has often given people sleepless nights and nightmares.
Changing the topic around, we thought we could make fun of the The Conjuring franchise. Of course, it is our love for horror that causes us to watch these iconic movies. However, with all due respect to the franchise (except The Nun 2), the films have plenty of goofs and moments that feel funnier rather than terrifying.
So, without further ado, here is a list of all the goofs from The Conjuring franchise, which made us laugh in theaters.
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is generally considered one of the worst films of the The Conjuring franchise. By director Michael Chaves (who is also the director of The Conjuring: Last Rites), the film was based on the real-life story of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, who stabs and kills his landlord.
As the court trial proceeds, Arne Cheyenne Johnson pleads not guilty, claiming to be under demonic possession. Ed & Lorraine Warren are called to investigate the case and hopefully prove Arne Cheyenne Johnson’s innocence.
Throughout the film, Ed Warren’s health remains faltering and unstable. One moment, he is shown barely able to walk, and the next, he is swinging a sledgehammer like it’s nothing. This inconsistency within the movie creates some tension-breaking moments as fans start scratching their heads on how Ed Warren got better. Maybe the mutant healing powers came in handy?
The Conjuring 2 was a pretty grim movie with Lorraine and Ed Warren getting personally involved with the demon Valak. With Ed Warren's life at stake, there is a beautiful moment in the film where Patrick Wilson's Ed Warren takes out an acoustic guitar and sings one of Elvis Presley's most iconic songs.
Ed Warren sings "Can't Help Falling in Love" with everyone joining him in singing it. It's supposed to be a calm-before-the-storm moment. However, the sudden singing and Patrick Wilson's acting skills make the scene funnier than it is supposed to be.
Although a beautiful moment, fans couldn't help but laugh at what was going on the screens since a singing session is never expected in a horror movie.
Another horror flick by James Wan, the Hodgson family faces plenty of scares throughout the movie, and one of these notable manifestations of the demonic spirit is The Crooked Man. We see the Crooked Man in a painting within the toy that Billy Hodgson plays with.
As the movie unfolds, the Crooked Man, who was just a painting in a toy, turns into a real-life horror as The Crooked Man becomes a reality. Wielding an umbrella and bent from his body, the manifestation is no doubt quite creepy. However, we couldn’t help but notice that he is quite funny as well.
Pick out a random image of The Crooked Man from The Conjuring 2, and you’ll feel that it’s Jim Carrey from The Mask. The hat, the umbrella, the cartoonish movements, and everything make him look like a funny character rather than a demonic entity. Of course, it was an attempt to scare the audience, but it seemed that it backfired on James Wan.
Once again, The Devil Made Me Do It is the culprit behind this incredulous moment that became an internet meme after its release. During the final confrontation, Ed Warren, Lorraine Warren, and the priest are trying to blast the demon out.
The way that Ed Warren and the young priest try to fight the occultist at the end of the movie makes it feel like it’s an action movie rather than a horror one. Considering how James Wan created that iconic finale moment in The Conjuring, it’s a bit hard to take The Devil Made Me Do It because the bar has been set so high.
One of the most notable goof-ups in The Conjuring franchise surprisingly comes from Mr. James Wan himself. In the original 2013 movie, the Perron family has a dog named Sadie. Sadie is found dead during the initial moments of the film.
However, at the end, when the Perron family is escaping the house, Sadie the dog is briefly seen trotting in the backyard.
Although it’s an understandable goof-up, the brief moment makes this entire horror and gory film into laughter at the innocence and cuteness of a dog.
