Being a man-child and a gentleman, here's everything that Jake Peralta taught us about life with Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
Even though introduced as a man-child who doesn’t know serious from silly, Andy Samberg’s Jake Peralta became one of the (if not the best) central figures in the iconic sitcom, Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
From his expert detective skills in solving cases to his love life with Melissa Fumero’s Amy Santiago, Jake Peralta involved us in his personal life, where we all found a character/trait relating to that character. Even though it was a sitcom, Jake Peralta taught us a lot of life lessons, and coming from a fan of the show since its inception, it was quite helpful.
So, here are Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s best life lessons by Jake Peralta, ranked (according to my liking).
Although starting out as friends during the opening season of the show, Amy Santiago and Jake Peralta’s hilarious bet turned into something serious as the two characters started falling in love with each other.
Throughout their hilarious journey and through the ups and downs, the couple taught us that the right partner can make the biggest difference in your life. When Amy Santiago reveals that she had also suffered through abuse in her career, Jake supports her through everything like a true gentleman.
“Your butt, your butt is da bomb” is still a heartfelt vow to make during any wedding, and it is thanks to Peraltiago that we learned about what it takes to love someone truly.
Jake Peralta was a man-child who loved “Die Hard” way too much, while Amy Santiago was a self-described “nerd” who got too excited about binders. In a way, the two characters were completely opposite to each other.
Even Amy Santiago’s difficulties making friendships, while Jake Peralta is an extrovert, were also portrayed quite beautifully throughout the show.
However, what these iconic moments taught us is that you don’t need to have common ground with your partner all the time for a healthy relationship. Despite their differences, they both respected each other’s passion and even gifted one another things related to their obsession, while not trying to drag each other into their interest.
Because of his man-child behaviour, Jake Peralta uses his humor and quips to address the underlying issue (notably his father issues). As the seasons progress, Jake Peralta maintains his humor but also opens up about his past traumas.
Even the bulky character of Terry Jeffords is an emotional man who cries and shows his emotions openly. Jake Peralta showed every person who had been holding on to their vulnerable emotions for far too long that it was okay to let them out and accept that vulnerabilities are a part of life and what makes us human.
Of course, we might be delving into some philosophical topics here, but a family isn’t necessarily the one where you’re born. Even though Jake Peralta had an absentee father throughout his whole life, he found family not with his father or mother. Instead, he built his family over at the Nine-Nine.
The wine aunt (Gina) and the badass aunt (Rosa) were a part of the family alongside the veteran uncles (Hitchcock and Scully), and the gym-freak uncle paired up with the weird cousin (Terry and Boyle), but it was his family. That is who Jake Peralta chose to be with, rather than living with his father, who had given him so much trauma.
So, you can always choose your own family.
Probably the biggest thing that Jake Peralta has ever taught people is that you can always be a kid. With his antics, his humor, and the shenanigans he used to do, Jake Peralta was always the center of attention. His humor often lit the darkest of rooms and got people through some tough times.
The important thing that Jake Peralta made the people realize is that they have to grow up eventually and take responsibility for their actions. Naturally, Jake Peralta had a lot of things to teach us, and he probably helped millions of people through his antics and shenanigans.
What's your favorite Brooklyn Nine-Nine moment?
